Netball v Hanford
The U13 team, buoyed by a speech from Razia Iqbal earlier in the day, travelled to Hanford determined to perform well.
After a brief warm-up, the St Mary’s girls went in to the match firing on all cylinders with some quick passes and electric movement up the court. The team were getting the ball in to the D consistently but some unlucky shots and good rebounding from Hanford kept the scores even after the first period at 2-2.
The girls were encouraged by their positive start and believed that if they continued in the same way that the goals would eventually come. This proved to be the case as St Mary’s were resolute in defence and imaginative in attack, leading to plenty of goal scoring opportunities which were duly converted. This led to St Mary’s going in to the final period with a promising 6-3 lead. The girls continued to work hard and extended their lead to 8-4 and managed to hold on to their lead to secure the victory.
Well done to all the girls who played, as it truly was a fantastic team performance. Hard work has definitely paid off.
The U11s also played Hanford, starting pprehensively but soon getting into their stride! In the first 3rd, some fantastic defending from Sofia and Charlotte kept the Hanford attack closed down. St Marys made some great passing with Emily and Esme instrumental in moving the ball down court. Some tall Hanford defenders denied St Mary’s a couple of goals so after the first 3rd we were 2-0 down. Hanford pulled away in the second 3rd to take a good lead but in the last 3rd, St Marys fought back with Sofia intercepting lots of passes and preventing Hanford from attacking. St Marys had lots of chances to score and Aurelia managed to pop in a great goal from 2 metres out. The score for the last 3rd was 1-1 demonstrating how much the St Marys U11’s improved during the game and gained in confidence!
