End of Season Hockey at King’s Bruton

Senior XI

Final Result: 2 – 0

Coach’s Player of the Match: Caro B

The last match of the season was always going to be a tough one but it was clear from the start which team was determined to win!  St Mary’s dominated both halves but struggled to get a shot on goal in the first half despite some great runs by Ollie and Oria. In the second half however, they did not lose any momentum and put the Bruton defence under tremendous pressure right from the whistle.

With a crowd of parents, some of whom were there to watch their daughters play for the last time, Caro picked the ball up in midfield, beat several players before entering the circle, beating a few more players and scored with a magnificent reverse stick shot, leaving the keeper not knowing what had happened. The team was not prepared to stop there and with only a few minutes to go, Elizabeth stormed down the right hand side, winning the ball and pushing through several players to reach the circle where a well timed cross eventually hit Willow’s stick and soared through the air to make it 2-0.

There were only a few minutes to go and the Bruton defence continued to soak up the pressure from St Mary’s but never looked like getting the ball into St Mary’s circle. Kirstie, in goal, did not touch the ball during the match due to the brilliant defence of Fizz, Olivia and Ella. Cressida had some difficulty keeping on her feet for the first half but had an excellent second half, along with Issy whose passing and defending were superb.

U15 XI

Final Result: 0 – 4

Coach’s Player of the Match: Lucy T-T

Player’s Player of the Match: Lottie B

In their last game of the season, the U15’s unfortunately suffered a narrow defeat against a strong King’s Bruton side. The girls battled bravely throughout but were unable to breakdown a well-drilled KBS defence. The team showed great commitment throughout, putting their body on the line with a number of our girls coming off the pitch with their fair share of bruises.

Lottie was outstanding in goal, displaying agility, skill and bravery in stopping countless attacks and shots on goal. Special mention must also go to the whole rest of the team who worked tirelessly until the final whistle.

U14/U15 XI

Final Result: 0 – 1

Coach’s Player of the Match: Selina

Player’s Player of the Match: Bego

This was a fantastic game that represented the true spirit of St Mary’s girls. Determination, resilience, courage to try something new, teamwork and huge support for each other! Bego was a great coach from the goal line, with Rocio working hard in the mid-defence to pick up and clear the ball. Skye, Tildy, Tabs, Bella and Sofia S ran some great attacking play up the pitch and looked dangerous in the D with 3 or 4 close strikes at goal. Selina made 2 or 3 great runs up the left side beating defenders with some newly learnt stick skills and great vision!

For 11 girls who had never played as a team before, the hockey shape and tactical play was amazing! A great game for the ‘B’s at the end of the season and a massive well done for everyone who played and represented St Mary’s.

U14 XI

Final Result: 0 – 3

Coach’s Player of the Match: Jimmy S

Player’s Player of the Match: Sofia M

What a fantastic game to end the season! Despite the score, it was an end to end match, with some absolutely fabulous tackling and defending, especially from Jimmy. The mids and forwards worked hard to play the ball up the pitch and created some great attacking opportunities. They had chances to put all their hard work improving their short corners into practice but the solid Bruton defence denied them some close chances at goal.

Sofia M made some superb saves showing great reaction-time and courage! Well done to all the players who have represented our U14 XI this term!
